Energy Performance Calculator

An energy performance calculator (hereinafter names as “the calculator”) has been developed by HKGBC for calculating the energy performance indicator under the “Zero-Carbon-Ready Building Certification Scheme” (hereinafter names as “the Scheme”).

The energy performance calculator can be used to:

  1. Benchmark the energy performance of a building with similar types of buildings;
  2. Facilitate building owners to set targets and pathways to go for carbon neutrality; and
  3. Track a building’s progress on their pathway to carbon neutrality.

A database for the Energy Utilisation Index (EUI) of commercial buildings, which includes commercial buildings (both landlord and premises users) and hotels, has been established. The database is established from the relevant data collected in the last mandatory energy audit prescribed by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) in 2012, surveys for some office premises and data from BEAM Plus submissions.

Under this certification,

  • Buildings within those building types can be benchmarked directly with the data from the database.
  • Buildings other than those can be assessed in terms of their energy reduction from a baseline year.
  • New buildings can be assessed from the amount of reduction comparing with a “business as usual model” through energy simulation.

It will not be practical to go for accuracy as each building is designed and operated differently. The emphasis is more on consistency. The calculator has provided the normalisation method and default values for some abnormal situations that have material impact on the results.
